Coaching the coach

The first use of the term coaching to mean an instructor or trainer arose around 1840 in Oxford University, slang for a private (vs. university) tutor who “carries” a student through an exam.

The very first use of the word “coach” in English occurred in the 1500’s to refer to a particular kind of carriage, a vehicle that transported people from one place to another.

Coaching thus has been used in language to describe the process used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be! Business coaching provides positive support, feedback and advice on an individual or group basis to improve personal effectiveness in the business setting.
